Unicorn Crew proudly presents their first full length album „Becoming a Mirror“. The 14 indie synth pop songs are inspired by post-punk and electronic tracks of the mid 80s. However, Le Crew rather appropriates than copies. Oozing a certain wistfulness, the album remains dance-oriented: Simply, the prefect soundtrack for retrofuture darkdancers.
"Becoming a mirror": Some mirrors reflect the heart's desire instead of a face. They reveal what could have been. They are a way to cope with sehnsucht. We become such a mirror. Music ricochets just below its surface. We pressure melodic shrapnel into a smooth surface. The music twitches. This mirror reflects life rather than light.

Is there anything tackier than a unicorn? Rainbow poo, pink manes. But stop, think twice. There is Gaff's origami unicorn from Blade Runner, hinting at Deckard being a replicant after all, all the time chasing what he already is. Or think of Lancelot the "Living Unicorn" bred by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, a self-appointed new pagan high priest of the Church of all Worlds. Or Rebecca Horns “Einhorn”: “In flimmernder Hitze, auf dem wogenden Feld, bewegt sich eine kleine weiße, Spitze auf dich zu (...).«
The Unicorn Crew is Annette Amon-Hassenzahl (Vocals) and Marc Hassenzahl (Music). We grew up in a club culture of song, sadness and darkness, so characteristic for the mid- to end-eighties. We had much fun with misery; we cherished the imperfect — and Unicorn Crew wants this back. More song, less technology.
Marc already had been involved in electronic music since 1987. Back then he co-founded the cassette label “in neutraler Zelle kein Zwang” (inZKZ) where he released three cassettes and a CD as Juniper Hill (with Markus Schwab). The last album “Können Tiere denken” (1992) had been electronic, experimental strangepop at its best, released as a split CD with Fußßßball, a side project of Tom Ellard (Severed Heads). In 1994, Marc co-founded an acid trance label called “compiler” (with Klaus Meier) and released three EPs. During that time, he released further dance-oriented tracks on various obscure labels. Then more important things had to be done. From 2002 on he kept producing a habit, but never released a track. In 2016 he started anew, working on material able to bring him back to his origins.
“Becoming a mirror” is the first installment of the resulting retrofuture tracks. They appropriate from many other artists. The mirror is a symbol for this.
